Lesson 13
Assess the unique relationship between Indian Nations and the American Government
How does the Native American government work? Do they have the same powers as the Federal government? Are they controlled by the State or Local governments?
That's what you're going to find out in this lesson.
There are 566 Federally recognized Indian Nations. These include tribes, nations, bands, pueblos, communities and native villages.
The United States recognizes these tribes as 'sovereign governments'. Which means they have the power to control themselves. Watch this news video from 2009 where President Obama talks about the governments relationship with recognized Indian Nations.
